Many writers live a solitary life, professionally speaking. I suggest that the best work is created when ideas are shared during the creative process

I attended a writers group last night. The attendees were competent, experienced writers. We shared our writing schedules, styles, and methods of developing our stories. Many writers live a solitary life, professionally speaking. I suggest that the best work is created when ideas are shared during the creative process. So many people, those who make money from the writers efforts tell new authors how difficult the writing process can be. They suggest that if you give them some of your revenue, they will make your dreams come true. Writing is work. Writing is being focused on your product. Writing is a job, if you don’t spend the time writing, you won’t succeed in your job.

Each year authors have a chance to have their work reviewed by the Pulitzer Prize committee, if their publisher thinks that the publication is worthy.

Each year authors have a chance to have their work reviewed by the Pulitzer Prize committee, if their publisher thinks that the publication is worthy. What makes a book worthy of such a distinction? I looked at my three books and recognized that, although, I love them and think they are worthy publications, the do not hve the “gravitas” so be considered. I know that I only have time for a few more books in my life ( I am 69). Should I simply write about subjects that have no chande of being worthy, or should I change my goals? Hopefully I will come to some answer that comforts me before too long.

My mother was considered a good cook when I was a kid. She made such exotic things as Spanish rice and rice pilaf.

I’ve been working with the impressive network of writers’ groups around the state of Florida over the last few weeks. We have many more books published in th[e United States than wver before. The increase in numbers clearly is because of self publishing. You may say that it simply means that there are a lot more bad books available because they have not been through the traditional gate keepers to the industry. I think that is not a completely fair observation. Each week across the state of Florida ( and I am sure all across America) hundreds of writers get together to critique each other’s works. Serious writers now rely on this method of editing both grammar and content on a regular basis.

My mother was considered a good cook when I was a kid. She made such exotic things as Spanish rice and rice pilaf. Today, thanks to juli Child, but in many ways more to Rachel Ray, my daughters cook using pancetta, sun dried tomatoes, green chiles and other ingredients never heard of by my mother.

The food network has made chefs out of many cooks and the beneficiaries are the grateful American diners. So it is with books. More writers are being encouraged because of the tools both to hone their writing skills and to market their product once the skills have created a publication.

What an exciting time for people who love the written word!

Start writing today. Continue tomorrow and each tomorrow until your first draft is finished. Inspiration moments, writer's blocks and all the other excuses are just that. Write and prosper!

I just spent $30 on a new software package to irganize and track my novel writing process. If you have read my posts, you will know that I believe in taking out the “mystery” of writing novels.

If you are an artist and intend to paint a large, complicated painting, professionals paint a “study” on a somewhat smaller canvas. This allows questions of composition, pallette, light source and shadows to be determined before touching a brush to the actual canvas intended for the final artwork.

Use the same care in preparing your novel. lay out your outline, main characters, point of view, basic scenes, and overall plot before you start to “ramble” into your written project. having said that, all of this is a help along the way. Start writing today. Continue tomorrow and each tomorrow until your first draft is finished. Inspiration moments, writer’s blocks and all the other excuses are just that. Write and prosper!

Writers should meet other writers. We need to learn and grow as we develop our skills. Ther are thousands of us who work at our writing every day. When you join the conferences you not only meet people who have similar skills with different perspectives but you also find people who want to promote themselves in a joint effort using social networking. Don’t forget that the first job of writing is to have written something worthwile. The second is to see that womeone else reads it besides your mother!

You can ignore the rest of the world if you are writing just for yourself- but no one will pay you do do that.” These are the words of Brian Freeman, author of Immorral and Stripped. His works have been published in 46 countries, so you must think he knows something…
